Floriade is Canberra's spring flower festival, laid out through Commonwealth Park on the shore of Lake Burley Griffin. The beds hold more than a million blooms, with tulips the headline act among the spring annuals. Entry is free and there is no need to register, so you can wander at your own pace. NightFest runs 1 to 4 October with ticketed evening sessions, and the season wraps up with the Great Big Bulb Dig on 12 October, when visitors dig up bulbs to take home.

Getting there: Free shuttle buses run from the City Bus Interchange every 20 minutes on weekdays and every 10 minutes on weekends and public holidays, 9.30am to 5.30pm. The light rail stops at London Circuit, about a 15-minute walk away, and organisers suggest parking in the city or near the National Triangle and catching the shuttle.
